Spring break schedule at Memorial Pool

Memorial Pool will have the following hours Monday - Friday for the Spring Break holiday:

5:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. lap swim; 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Aquacize (Monday, Wednesday and Friday); 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. lap swim; 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. public swim. Regular hours will continue on Saturday with the pool open noon to 3 p.m. and Sunday the pool is closed.

Humboldt County School District Art Show

The Humboldt County School District Art Show is coming soon to a new location near you. This year the student art show has found a new location; the Humboldt Museum. It's a win, win, see all the district school children's artwork and stroll through the museum to see new exhibits and improvements. The Humboldt Museum is located at the corner of Jungo Road and Maple Avenue. You may view the artwork during regular museum hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, through March 31. Please, "come and view the student's artwork" who live and go to school in our community.

Senior Center Yard Sale seeking donations

Doing a little spring cleaning around the house? The Senior Center is planning a fundraiser yard sale on April 14, and they are seeking donations. Drop off your items now, or call the Senior Center 623-6211 for pickup of larger items.

4-H Spring Tree and Shrub Sale

The annual 4-H Small Animal Committee tree sale runs through April 27. Order forms may be picked up at the Humboldt County Cooperative Extension Office, 1085 Fairgrounds Road, Winnemucca. The deadline for ordering trees is April 27 at 5 p.m. Trees will be available for pickup in May. For more information call the Extension Office at 623-6304.

Composting Workshop

11 a.m. - noon - Teresa Schroeder, Master Gardener, will lead a Composting Workshop at the Winnemucca Community Garden, 151 W. McArthur Ave. (across from Sonoma Heights Elementary School). National Weather Service weather spotter training

The Elko National Weather Service office will host a weather spotter training on Wednesday, April 4, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Humboldt County Library, 85 E. Fifth St. If you would like to update your severe weather spotting skills, become a weather spotter for the Elko National Weather Service Office or just have a keen interest in weather and would like to learn more, this free of charge, no pre-registration spotter training session is for you. The session will focus on thunderstorm formation and structure, tornadoes and tornado safety, lightning and lightning safety, flooding, what type of information to report to the National Weather Service and the procedures to follow to report significant weather to the National Weather Service.

Incoming Freshmen Night

Lowry High School is presenting an evening of information for all incoming freshmen and their parents on April 4 at 6 p.m. in the old gym at Lowry. The program will include brief presentations from each department, followed by questions and answers to any registration concerns. Actual registration for the incoming freshmen class will be completed by each student the week of April 9 in the Winnemucca Junior High School computer lab. Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Accredited Veterans Advocate Paul Ruprecht will be at the VA Clinic in Winnemucca on Monday, April 9, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesday, April 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to assist veterans, their spouse and dependants with VA disability claims or other VA-related benefits. Power Paws 4-H Dog Club accepting new members

The Power Paws 4-H Dog Club is accepting new members and their dogs for the 2011-2012 4-H Club year. The club will meet every Monday (excluding holidays) at the Extension Office at the Fairgrounds at 4 p.m. Training topics to be covered during the club year include dog obedience, agility, rally and showmanship. The club has plans to travel to several dog shows and events throughout the club year. The county 4-H dog show will be held in June 2012, which will wrap up the club year. Fallon Naval Sea Cadets

Fallon Naval Sea Cadets is a non-profit youth program designed to educate youth from ages 11-17 about the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Education includes military bearing, marching, physical training, courtesy, responsibility, and much more. Many opportunities are available for advanced training. Meetings are one weekend a month at the Naval Air Station in Fallon. Volunteers, both ex-military and civilian are needed for instructors and chaperones. Free resistance exercise class

Each Tuesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. a resistance exercise class is held at the Humboldt County Senior Center. Resistance exercise is a program designed for seniors proven to increase balance and strength using weights. There is no beginning or advanced level. All equipment including the weights is provided. Respite Care

When caregivers need a "personal time" break from their loved ones, a Respite Care Worker can fill in for them. Caregiving can be exhausting, not allowing the caregiver to go to the doctor, visit a friend, doing some personal shopping or even go in the other room to kick back. Respite care can help. The service is free and our workers have security clearance and have been trained. Local Special Olympics chapter

A chapter of Special Olympics for children ages 8 - 22 is now available in Winnemucca. The group bowls in the fall school year and then will be doing track in the spring. Your athlete may choose to compete in one or all of the sports available. You do not need to be a student in the Humboldt County School District to participate. Zion Zone Youth Center

3 p.m. - 6 p.m. weekdays - Zion Zone Youth Center is a free, non-profit, after school and summer program for the community youth. We provide a quality recreational enrichment program for youth ages 9 to 16 years old that need a safe, supervised environment after school and during the summer. Zion Zone Kids operates according to the Humboldt County School District schedule. Daily devotion and positive action lessons on why we don't smoke, drink alcohol or use any illicit drugs. ESL classes at GBC

Free adult English as a Second Language classes are currently being offered at the Great Basin College Adult Learning Center, 5490 Kluncy Canyon Road, Winnemucca. Classes cover speaking, writing and speaking for all levels, as well as basic computers for beginners. Students can also learn about the U.S. government.
