The exact time of the eclipse was 4:58 a.m. Pacific Time. According to NASA, it will be the shortest eclipse of its kind this century. A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, Earth and moon line up, with Earth in the middle. The eclipse can appear red when Earth's atmosphere filters out the blue light. / Michael Michaelsen photo
