  • Standing up for rural postal delivery
    Thursday, August 27, 2015 1:00 AM
Post offices are crucial anywhere, but especially crucial in rural areas that depend on the postal service to stay connected through news delivery, services crucial to businesses, and, in some communities, a link to prescription drugs and other services.

  • Trump: Rising from the GOP’s ashes
    Wednesday, August 26, 2015 1:00 AM
There’s no shortage of publicity maestro, name-emblazer Donald Trump think pieces on the Internet these days. Most will attribute his straight talk to his more-than-likely-fleeting frontrunner status. Others point to some anger or racism the Trump Brand Name has tapped into. The rest? Apologists or denouncers.
  • A special town
    Wednesday, August 26, 2015 1:00 AM
I no longer live in Lovelock. That is why my columns are no longer filled with children’s laughter in the park, the distant barking of dogs and the sounds of horns from passing trains. But in my mind I still hear and see them. The one stoplight still cycles through green, yellow and red on a mostly empty street. People from the outside world still glide by on the freeway thinking “What town is this again?” and “Should I stop for gas?”.
  • About planning
    Tuesday, August 25, 2015 1:00 AM
EUREKA, Nev. — Planning takes, well, planning. Some people are born planners. Off the cuff someone says we should have a family reunion and the planner of the family steps forward with a remarkable list of ideas and plans. The time, the place, the dates, the food, the places to stay, the — well you get the idea. Every minute of the event has been planned even before the rush of air from the first utterance of the idea has had time to settle into everyone’s ears!
  • A walk around Winnemucca
    Sunday, August 23, 2015 1:00 AM
LINDEN, Texas — We moved to Winnemucca in 1947, before the start of my Sophomore year in high school. Leaving Pershing County High School was tough, since I loved that town and school, and the people. But soon the kids in Humboldt County High School made me feel right at home. There were no cliques back then, the new kid on the block was soon one of the crowd, with no reservations attached.

  • Hypothetical situation
    Thursday, August 20, 2015 1:00 AM
Let’s suppose that in a hypothetical situation, one day in the future, the Blue Meanies capture you. After some pretty rough treatment, you find yourself in a windowless room strapped to a chair. Bright lights are shining in your face blinding you. Dark forms are standing over you. They do not seem at all happy with the situation. They keep yelling at you and asking the same questions over and over: “Who are you? Identify yourself. Where are your papers? Who are you really?”.
  • Travel the world without leaving Texas
    Thursday, August 20, 2015 1:00 AM
LINDEN, Texas — Back in the good old days whe times were bad, Texas was the bragging capital of the world. Texas was by far the largest State in the Forty Eight. Then along came #*+&*% Alaska, and our bragging rights went south. Alaska says, “little ol Texas is less than half our size.” Ouchie. Alaska cannot say, “Travel the World without leaving Alaska,” but Texas can say that about Texas. So there, “The Last Frontier” State.
  • Round of applause
    Thursday, August 20, 2015 1:00 AM
How about a round of congratulatory applause for Barrick’s landmark achievement at its Turquoise Ridge (TR to its friends) mine, of two years without a lost-time injury and had no environmental permit violations. And once the well-deserved thunder of applause has subsided, how about an equally enthusiastic ‘thank you’ for the way these accomplishments enhance the reputation of mining by showing mining’s critics what can be done.
