  • Cruz pleads guilty to arson

    It’s been nearly a year since an arson fire destroyed three Lovelock businesses in the pre-dawn hours of Nov. 17, 2019. Main Street still bears the scar, an eyesore of piled rubble and debris.
    Oscar Yocundo Cruz has been in jail since his Feb. 2020 arrest, after a three-month investigation by State Fire Marshal Joel Martin. At his earlier court hearings, Cruz, 24, pleaded not guilty. On Wednesday, Sept. 9, he changed his plea to guilty.   
    Cruz faces sentencing on multiple counts of arson and conspiracy to commit arson.

    n a few days, the California wildfires would hide Lovelock’s view of the mountains, fill the air with smoke and create a sense of claustrophobia, but on Mon. the skies were clear.
     Temperatures soared to the triple-digits. Inside the courtroom, the defendants and their attorneys wore masks.

    The Pershing County 11th Judicial Court met on Monday, Aug. 3. The DA’s Office returned from quarantine. Clerk of the Court Carole Elerick checked temperatures before allowing people in the courtroom. Under the Governor’s mandate, all parties wore face masks and practiced social distancing.
    Jennifer Marie Montes, 38, pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement, a Category C felony. She admits to embezzling funds from the local girl’s softball club. Montes faces the possibility of one to five years in prison and fines of up to $10,000. She’s eligible for probation at the judge’s discretion. 
    Before accepting a guilty plea, the judge routinely asks each defendant to state what they did wrong.
