Last year’s Fearless 5k Halloween Fun Run was a great community event and Winnemucca’s Family Support Center is planning a repeat performance this year.

The date is Saturday, Oct. 23 — registration is at 11 a.m. the 5k starts at 11:30 a.m.

“There are several fun things going on in town that day and we hope people will get out and enjoy it all,” said Joyce Sheen, Family Support Center board member.

“Many of the people who participated last year had a really good time and said they hoped we would do the fun run again this year,” said Fun Run chairman Shana Murdock. “We’re excited to do it again, it was a ton of fun and the event gave a real boost to the Family Support Center – while it helped remind our community what it is we do.”

“The Boys and Girls Club of Winnemucca has partnered with Family Support center again this year, which gives participants an easy place to gather before the event and provides a back-up plan for warm-up after the event in case we’re not as lucky with weather as we were last year,” Murdock said.

Many of Winnemucca’s first responders will be at candy checkpoints to hand out treats along the way. Those who participate are encouraged to wear their fun, wacky, scary, inventive, surprising, Halloween costumes and makeup.

Everyone at the event is entered into drawings for some really nice prizes and there will be free popcorn and cotton candy.

This year, there’s even the opportunity to participate in a 50/50 cash raffle.

Tickets for the Fearless 5k Halloween Fun Run are $20 for individual entries or $50 for a family – they’re available from any Family Support Center board members, staff, at the Family Support Center, online at thefamilysupportcenter.org and at the event.

The fun run isn’t just for runners. “Last year, we had people walking, pushing strollers, kids and adults on bikes, scooters, and skateboarders,” Sheen said. She added, “Many local businesses and individuals have again donated prizes will go to our participants after the fun run.”

A local food truck, plus free cotton candy and popcorn will round out the offerings again this year.

“Last year, Family Support Center’s Fearless 5k Fun Run was a great success,” said Sheen. “I can see increasing awareness and support for mental health and substance abuse treatment in our community and that’s the mission of the Family Support Center and its wonderful counselors and staff.”

“Our counselors, staff and board members have been looking forward to doing the Fearless 5k Fun Run again all year long,” said FSC Executive Director Renee Mayo. “We’re ready with a great event.”

Family Support Center’s counselors and staff work to provide our community access to mental health and family therapy, play therapy, anger management, trauma counseling and treatment, group therapy, parenting classes, substance abuse evaluations and treatment.

In addition,  a 16 week program, called Celebrating Families, works with every member of the family to build communication and strengthen children and parents. A 12-week Women’s Trauma Group and a separate eight-week Men’s Trauma Group each use evidence-based curriculum in group settings to build confidence and coping skills, a 12-week Nurturing Parenting program gives parents the skills and support needed to strengthen families.

Substance abuse evaluation and treatment includes individual and group counseling and related services.
