    With wildfires burning across the state and much of the West, many residents are shaking their heads, wondering how we got to the point where smoke-filled skies are just something we have to accept as part of living in Nevada. A new podcast from the Living With Fire Program seeks to shed some light on that, as well as share perspectives and stories from land managers, scientists, fire professionals and community members about how wildfire is currently managed, the impacts of wildfires, and the role that humans play in living more safely with wildfire.

    The Humboldt General Hospital District Board of Trustees recently reviewed the emergency room physician contractor group Envision Physician Services and requested that the most common local insurances accepted by HGH are accepted for emergency room services.
    Envision Physician Services Director of Operations Dawn Sears said that the hospital has had a contract to provide services at HGH since 2005, with an extension letter signed in 2011.

    The Humboldt County School District Board of Trustees held its first regular meeting of the new 2021-22 school year on Tuesday, July 27. Among the items that were addressed on the agenda, the board also spent a large portion of the meeting discussing goals they wish to see met by the school district. This discussion was based upon a previous discussion the board held on June 22.

    Brad Crowell, Director of the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, said on Nevada Newsmakers that the future looks brighter for the proposed lithium mine at Thacker Pass in Humboldt County than it does for the Rhyolite Ridge site in Esmeralda County.
    "All the challenges related to Thacker Pass, from my perspective and my jurisdiction, are manageable," Crowell told host Sam Shad. "They just need to be managed."

    A 67-year-old Nevada man pleaded guilty but mentally ill on Monday and will avoid a death penalty trial in the fatal ambush shooting of a veteran highway patrol trooper on a remote state highway in March 2020.
    John Leonard Dabritz, a former resident of the small White Pine County mining town of Ruth, is expected in September to face a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing highway patrol Sgt. Ben Jenkins, 47.

    The Winnemucca, Humboldt County area shows a zero vacancy rate for apartments and an immediate need for luxury and low/middle income units in addition to housing developments currently underway based on the recent housing study which includes data from the first part of May 2021. 
    The American Community Survey (ACS) by the US Census showed data from 2014-2019 that median home prices steadily increased to $180,600 in 2019, with anticipated increases to over 200,000 when 2020 figures are available early next year. 
  • HCSD superintendent meets with lawmakers in DC

    Humboldt County School District Superintendent, Dr. Dave Jensen, has returned from his scheduled visit to Capitol Hill. Jensen’s trip to Washington DC was a part of the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) National Advocacy Conference. 
    During the conference, members of the AASA Governing Board had the opportunity to meet with leaders from both the Senate and Congress in regards to various issues currently affecting education both on a local and national level.
  • Highway 95/Orovada intersection safety discussed

    Thacker Pass Concerned Citizens (TPCC) group members recently explored safety improvement options for US Highway 95 and NV-293 Kings River Highway Junction. Lithium Nevada Corp is exploring options to make intersection safety improvements with consideration to community feedback and contingent upon Nevada Department of Transportation approval.
    Lithium Nevada Corp Vice President of Government and Community Relations Tim Crowley said that the original idea of bypassing the interchange for material transportation was found to have substantial capital costs, the capital would instead be used to build a new school in a new location to provide safety and a better facility without as much cost.

    U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei of Nevada had three surgeries and an outpatient procedure over the past 10 months for cancerous tumors on his kidneys and a cancerous spot in his esophagus, the Republican congressman disclosed Friday.
    Amodei told The Associated Press that he did not reveal the cancer when he first learned of it last September or his surgery before the November election because he didn’t want it to be used against him in his reelection campaign.
