Now that you have your Dutch Oven seasoned, have learned how to be a little safe in its use, and learned how to get the temperature right, there are some other items you will want to have on hand.  

These will make it easier to cook in your Dutch Oven. So let’s make a list of some of the most useful items.  

• Scrubbing pad and matches and/or instant lighter

• Hot pads, hot mitts, and leather gloves

• Long handled tongs, serving spoon, fork, sharp knife and spatula

• Paper towels (always keep a roll handy)

• A small towel or cloth

• A “Lid Lifter” 

• A “trivet” (or two) – handy for cooling your dish or setting your lid on while examining your dish

• A spray bottle of “vinegar water” (1 part Apple Cider Vinegar to 4 parts water)

• A spray bottle of “Cooking Oil”

• Liquid dish soap

• Charcoal chimney

As you cook with your Dutch oven, you will find that you use many of these items every time.

You will probably find other items that you love to have on hand and ready for use when desired.  You should make up a “Cook Box” or “Possibles Bag” in which you can place all the stuff you use regularly.  This way, you won’t have to hunt all over when you get the itch to cook up that special Dutch oven dish the family loves so much.  

You may be asking yourself about now, “What is a Trivet”?   For those unfamiliar with the term, here are some pictures.

They vary in shape and use, but are basically a metal framework on which you can place something in order to keep it over the underlying surface (ie: so as not to burn your table with a hot Dutch oven).   Meat trivets work inside a Dutch oven to keep meat off the bottom.
