    Wednesday, November 6, 2019 1:00 AM
The Pershing County soccer team surprised themselves on Monday, Oct. 28, senior night at PCHS.

Along the way, the Mustangs said farewell to six seniors.
Pershing County ended the year at 6-14-1 overall, and 4-9-1 in the 3A Northern 'B' division.
Earlier in the season, Lovelock traveled to Fernley and lost 6-1, giving up three goals in the first 15 minutes.
“We were trying a new lineup,” said Eva Matuszyk, the assistant coach. “I guess our old one would have worked out fine because we ended the season with a win.”
  • Lowry sees season end with loss to Spring Creek in playoff opener
    Wednesday, November 6, 2019 1:00 AM
The last time the Lowry High School football team hosted a regional playoff game, the current squad was in elementary or middle school in 2012.
The Buckaroos erased that streak this year, finishing fourth in the Northern 3A and earning the No. 4 seed.
Lowry, playing in the postseason for the second straight year, hosted Spring Creek on a cool crisp Friday night. The Buckaroos beat the Spartans 21-20 in the regular season in September.
In would not go Lowry’s way the second time around, as Spring Creek won a low-scoring battle 21-7 to end the Buckaroos’ year at 6-4.
Spring Creek will now play Churchill County in Fallon on Friday and Fernley will host Truckee in the other regional final in the Northern 3A.
“We just couldn’t get things going,” said LHS coach Taua Cabatbat. “We came out sluggish and couldn’t get the offense going. They are a good team and will keep the ball from you with their running game.”

Lowry ended the season at 1-17-3 overall and 0-16-2 in the Northern 3A ‘A’ division. First-year head coach Misty Stene noted the record doesn’t reflect on the improvement by the team.
  • Over-the-air television upgrades continue
    Tuesday, November 5, 2019 1:00 AM
Low-cost, over-the-air television should be more reliable thanks to new electrical upgrades on Toulon Peak. Funded by a modest county property tax, 21 channels are now available to locals with a digital antenna who can’t afford or don’t want costly satellite or streaming video services.
The TV District project has required many hours and long drives up a rough road for Pershing County Commission Chairman Larry Rackley. Calls from concerned viewers about weak or no television signals or the loss of a favorite channel could mean another visit to Toulon Peak.
The TV District lineup includes Reno news, entertainment and public television channels. Also available are two K14KQ channels broadcast locally by the Pershing County School District.

  • Elko girls score two late goals to defeat Lowry
    Friday, November 1, 2019 1:00 AM
Even though the Lowry High School girls soccer team is out of the playoff chase, the Lady Bucks had the chance to ruin the postseason hopes of Elko on Tuesday afternoon in Winnemucca.
For nearly 60 minutes Lowry did just that leading Elko for much of the match, until the Indians scored two late goals to escape with a 2-1 win. Elko stayed in the fifth and final playoff spot with the victory.
“It’s coming together and it’s right there,” said LHS coach Misty Stene. “The first half was one of the best we played all year from the tactical side of the game. We just hit that lull for a couple minutes and it hurt us.”
