The Lowry High School wrestling team was back on the mats last weekend in Elko County for the annual Spring Creek Kiwanis Invitational that draws teams from Idaho and southern Nevada.
The Buckaroos placed seventh in the field of nearly 30 teams with 126 points, as host Spring Creek ran away with the title with 306 points. Fernley was second at 189.50 and Caldwell, Idaho (184.50), Virgin Valley (183) and Twin Falls, Idaho, (149) rounded out the top five.
“This is one of the better tournaments we go to,” said LHS coach John Brooks. “You had some of these weight classes that were stacked with some really good wrestlers. We picked up a couple good wins, but lost a couple that we shouldn’t have had. I am that guy that looks at those losses and thinks what we could have done better to win it.”

    Two of the most stories wrestling programs in Nevada history got together on Wednesday night for a dual as part of Lowry High School’s senior night.
    Yerington, of the Northern 2A, made the trip down to Winnemucca to take on the Buckaroos.

    The McDermitt High School boys basketball team hit the road last weekend for a pair of Eastern 1A games and came home with a split. The Bulldogs are now 2-4 in league play and 4-13 overall.

    The McDermitt High School girls basketball team began a four-game road trip this past weekend in Elko County.
    The Lady Bulldogs collected a 61-21 win at Carlin on Friday, Jan. 17, but lost 55-43 to Owyhee on Saturday afternoon and now sit at 2-3 in the Eastern 1A and 8-6 overall.

    The Pershing County High School boys basketball team dropped three games this week — to Oasis Academy (62-28), White Pine (67-23) and West Wendover (69-18).

    The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team saw a double-digit lead get away on Saturday afternoon, as Yerington rallied to beat the Lady Longhorns 47-44.
    The win by the Lions moved them into a three-way tie for first place in the Northern 2A with Incline and White Pine. The Lady Longhorns are fourth in the league at 5-3 and Pershing County is fifth at 4-4.

    With teams from Idaho and throughout the state of Nevada gathering to do battle, the Battle Mountain High School wrestling team was eager to see where it stacked up in the standings.

    Last weekend, over 300 top wrestlers competed in the 27th annual Spring Creek Kiwanis tournament. 
    Pershing County’s six grapplers took advantage of the opportunity to compete against the best of the best.
    “This is the toughest tournament we’ll compete in all year with the inclusion of some Idaho schools and larger schools in our area,” said coach Mike Brooks. “We were happy with how our kids competed even when outmatched.”

  • Fallon races past Lowry to secure second place in Northern 3A

    The last time the Lowry High School boys basketball team and Fallon met, the Greenwave were completing a last-minute comeback in the Northern 3A regional semifinals in Reno last February. Fallon eventually won in overtime and the state championship a week later.
    The two rivals got back together again in Winnemucca on Friday night, with Fallon earning a convincing 75-47 win over Lowry. 
    The Greenwave moved into sole possession of second place in the Northern 3A at 8-1, while the Buckaroos dropped to third place at 7-2 and 10-5 overall.
  • Serna competes at 2020 Blizzard Blast in Carson City

    Battle Mountain’s Nevaeah Serna was in Carson City this past weekend for the 2020 Blizzard Blast.
    Serna took home the top spot in the girls 8 and under 25-yard butterfly with a time of 19.86 seconds to beat Carson’s Aliyah Heyder by .09 seconds.
    Serna place third in the girls 8 and under 50-yard butterfly at 55.40, cutting 1.74 seconds off her time. Heyder won that race at 47.75 and Sparks Dominique Dickerson was second at 54.82.
