Teamwork pays. Pershing County’s 4-H coordinator Colby Burke recently collaborated with high school coaches Jared Jensen and Jesse Canchola to bring the Major League University to Lovelock. 
As a result, over 80 Lovelock girls and boys had a productive and fun midsummer weekend.
The MLU baseball and softball clinics took place at two of Lovelock’s most scenic spots – the high school baseball field and McDougal Park. 
Many of the four through eight-year-olds at McDougal picked up a bat for the first time.
“The goal with the younger group was to make softball and baseball fun as well as teaching the game,” said Jensen. “The kids learned some great skills from knowledgeable coaches.”

    The Lovelock Softball Association held its fourth league championship tournament on July 29. Thick N Wild walked away with their third consecutive title. 
  • Battle Mountain racers hit the track in Winnemucca

    Drivers from around the Northern Nevada area made their way to Winnemucca this past weekend for two days of dirt-track racing. Friday night's action was cut short just before the start of the main events. The heat races were completed, but a rain storm hit during intermission and wiped the rest of the night out. Racers returned Saturday afternoon to complete the Friday main events and Saturday's action took place as well. Battle Mountain Raceway will hold races on Aug. 14.

     
  • Volleyball team gets ready for season with Gold Medal Squared camp

    Battle Mountain youngsters from the sixth to 12th grade had the opportunity to improve their volleyball skills with the Gold Medal Squared volleyball camp last week at the Battle Mountain Rec Center. The camp focused on fundamental skills, game-like activities and teaming systems.

     
  • Lovelock Softball Association slides toward end of season

    This Thursday, the Lovelock Softball Association names its 2021 league championship team. 
    The title game starts at 8 p.m. at McDougal Park. 
  • Battle Mountain swim team competes at Silver State Championships

    The Battle Mountain swim team concluded its season at Idlewild Pool in Reno at the 2021 NNA Silver State Championships, which was held July 16-18.
    There were 30 teams and 401 swimmers from California and Nevada. The finals on July 18, were canceled due to air quality.
    Susie Thompson finished fourth in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 38.25, a 14.44 second improvement. She placed 16th in the girls 200 individual medley with a time of 3 minutes, 37.13 seconds, a .24 second improvement. She placed 15th in the 100-meter breaststroke at 2:01.47 and 21st in the 100-meter freestyle (1:33.40). 
  • Annual RPM Camp takes place at Battle Mountain Recreation Center

    The annual RPM Fundamental Basketball Camp was held July 19-21 at the Battle Mountain Recreation Center. Lander County sponsored the camp and there was no fee. The camp is put on by Battle Mountain girls basketball coach Paul Tremayne, Randy Havens, a coach in California and Michael Anderson from Wooster High School in Reno. The camp provides instruction to boys and girls in the fourth to 12th grades, teaching them the fundamentals of basketball. The goal is to develop the skills necessary to become successful players in the future.

    The high school rodeo season came to a close on Saturday night as the National High School Finals Rodeo concluded its week stay at the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln, Neb.
    A handful of Humboldt County and Battle Mountain club members took part in the event.
    Humboldt County’s Billy DeLong competed in three events.  He finished 29th in the nation with 275 points. In his first performance, he scored 137 points, which was good enough for sixth and 37th in the first go-around.

    Three Nevada players were named to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List Thursday morning, as wide receivers Romeo Doubs and Elijah Cooks, and tight end Cole Turner were tabbed candidates for college football’s award for top receiver.
    The three candidates for the Wolf Pack led all schools in the country on the list, and continues a first week of watch list reveals which has featured plenty of Nevada presence.

    The Winnemucca Junior Golf season came to a close on Wednesday, July 21, as Angelo Bidart shot a score of 81 to win the Jeff Wade Memorial junior golf tournament.

    Barring a dramatic change of direction, Texas and Oklahoma are moving toward taking the Red River Rivalry to the Southeastern Conference in a seismic shift that will have repercussions in college sports from coast to coast.
    According to multiple reports, the first and significant formal step of the process could come as soon as Monday with the two schools informing the Big 12 they will not renew the contractual agreement that binds conference members until 2025.
