The Pershing County High School girls soccer team stood onstage in the PCHS auditorium last Tuesday night at the fall sports awards. 
Seventeen were local girls but the other two crossed an ocean to reach Lovelock, Nevada.

    Prior to Jovi Kuskie winning the 2021 3A cross country state championship, the last Buckaroo runner to accomplish that feat was Felicia George (now Felicia Richardson) in 2005.
    After Kuskie won the state title, Richardson reached out to congratulate  her on the accomplishment.
    “The timing was perfect and I kinda think I needed it,” she told Kuskie.

    DeAndre Hughes rushed for a school-record 279 yards — scoring two touchdowns and adding a successful 2-point conversion run in the third overtime — to lift Air Force to a 41-39 victory over Nevada in Mountain West Conference play on Friday night.

  • Sapien named Northern 3A East Offensive Player of the Year

    Lowry High School’s Giovani Sapien was named the Northern 3A East Offensive Player of the Year, which is selected by the league’s coaches. 
    Sapien rushed for 214 yards and two touchdowns on just 24 carries and caught 26 passes for 534 yards and seven touchdowns, with an average reception of 20.5 yards. 
    He was a first-team, all-North selection (both East/West divisions) at wide receiver and was a first-team, all-North choice as a return specialist. 
    Sapien returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and a punt as well.
  • Lowry wrestlers hit the mat after missing last year

    After some 640 days the Lowry High School wrestling team returned to its wrestling room as the 2021-22 season got underway last week. The 2020-21 season was canceled due to the Covid pandemic, leaving athletes without a winter sport to participate in. The season is scheduled to get started on Dec. 4 in Fallon. Lowry hosts the Cody Louk Invitational on Dec. 10-11.

    The sound of basketball’s hitting the gym floors are back as high school squads are back on the floor after missing a season last year because of the Covid pandemic. The Lowry boys open the season Dec. 2-4 in Elko. The Lowry girls head to Las Vegas Dec. 9-11 for the Liberty tournament. The McDermitt girls travel to Wells from Dec. 2-4 for the WREC Classic and the McDermitt boys are in Reno Dec. 2-4 for the Winter Invitational.

  • Junior varsity volleyball team attends sports awards

    Pershing County High School JV volleyball coach Nancy Meissner introduced the junior varsity team at the sports awards last Tuesday. 
    The freshmen included Aaliyah Allen and Chelsey Bloome. Allen had 84 kills for the season, the most on the team. Meissner noted that Bloom has “the best and most positive attitude.”
  • Spirit squad will cheer for basketball players

    The PCHS Spirit Squad learned over 50 cheers and dances this year, but even they can’t be two places at the same time. 
    Faced with a choice between basketball and cheerleading, Kyria Angel and Kaylah Hanley opt to play basketball this winter.
    “We’re looking forward to cheering them on to victory,” said cheer coach Cece Thornhill.

    States will have a choice of 12, 13 or 14 weight classes for both boys and girls competition in high school wrestling, effective with the 2023-24 season. 
    This will be the first separate weight classes established for girls in high school wrestling, and it marks the first time that state associations will have a choice in the number of weight classes.

    The fall season for the Nevada High School Rodeo Association is coming to a close, as the competitors were in Alamo on the weekend of Nov. 5-7.
    Once again, the local junior high and high school rodeo clubs turned in strong performances.
    Humboldt County’s Billy DeLong took home the top spot in the boys cutting average with 147 points, winning both performances with 23 and 74 points, respectively.
