Coming off a pair of victories, the Lowry High School volleyball team looked to continue its winning ways this past weekend as the squad celebrated homecoming week.

Lowry hosted Elko on Friday night and suffered a 25-13, 25-17 and 25-20 loss to the Indians. The Lady Bucks kept the first set close with a kill from Sierra Maestrejuan and an ace by Amanda Franklin. The set was tied at 7-7, when Elko went on a 5-1 run.

A pair of kills by Eva Andradottir kept Lowry within five points at 15-10, only to see Elko pull away to 20-11 lead and win the set.

Elko kept the momentum going, scoring the first seven points of the second set and eventually building a 12-1 lead. 

The Lady Bucks  grinded their way back into the set after kills by Reece Kalkoske and Maestrejuan and an ace by Franklin. Elko used a late run in the set to pull away despite two more kills from Maestrejuan.

Elko jumped out to another quick 6-1 lead in the third set behind three aces. Lowry battled back once again and tied the set at 10 on a tip by Andradottir and two kills by Shanae Smith. The set was tied once more at 11, after a kill by Juliana Ruiz, when Elko went on a 9-2 run to claim the set and match.

Spring Creek knocks off Lowry in four sets

Lowry was back on the floor on Saturday afternoon to take on Spring Creek. The match went back-and forth, but Spring Creek prevailed 21-25, 27-25, 25-21 and 26-24. With the loss, the Lady Bucks dropped to 2-7 in the Northern 3A.

Lowry never trailed in the first set, grabbing a 12-7 lead off of two kills and a block by Kalkoske and kills by Ruiz and Maestrejuan. The Lady Bucks led by as many as eight points at 21-13, only to see the Spartans close the gap to 23-21, when Smith stopped the run with a kill and Lowry captured the set after a miss hit by Spring Creek.

The Spartans scored four of the first six points, but the Lady Bucks jumped in front at 13-12 after a kill by Maestrejuan and a block by Kalkoske. The advantage grew to 24-19, but Lowry could not close out the set. Spring Creek went on a 6-0 run to go in front 25-24. The Lady Bucks prevented match point, only to see the Spartans score the final two points to complete the comeback.

Spring Creek built a 14-8 lead in the third set, when Lowry went on a 5-0 run to close the gap to a point. Kills by Maestrejuan and Ruiz kept Lowry within striking distance, but late service errors proved to be costly for Lowry.

The fourth set was tied five different times within the first 16 points. Spring Creek broke an 8-8 tie with six straight points. Trailing 21-14, the Lady Bucks rallied to tie the set at 23 after a block by Kalkoske and a kill by Isbaelle Ozanick. The set was tied one final time at 24, when the Spartans scored the final two points to win the match.

Lowry travels to Fernley on Thursday for a 6 p.m. match and return home Saturday to play Sparks at noon.
